You may need a root canal if a tooth has become infected due to a cavity, an injury, or an illness. The tooth’s pulp, which lies just below the enamel, is especially vulnerable to cavities and infection. The pulp is root-shaped and contains the tooth’s nerve. Because it only serves as the tooth’s pain conductor, it can be removed without harming the tooth. “Root canal” refers to removing the diseased pulp, to save an infected, injured, or sensitive tooth. If your dentist has recommended a root canal, you’ll be happy to know that modern advances in technology and anesthesia options have made root canals much more comfortable than they were for previous generations.
