TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint. This joint connects your jaw to your skull, and you have a left and right joint that are supposed to work in unison. TMJ is a complex joint with an important job. Your jaw opens and closes on these very strong hinge joints, and also moves from side to side when necessary. TMJ disorders affect the joints or the jaw muscles attached to them. There are several possible causes for TMJ disorders, and multiple treatment possibilities depending on the diagnosis.
