Typical Discomforts Associated with Tooth Implants

July 15, 2022

Dental implant surgery is a highly advanced dental procedure used to improve a patient’s smile and increase their confidence. After getting dental implants, you will notice an immediate difference in the way your teeth look and feel. Your new teeth will be strong and durable, making it easier to eat and speak without worry. Additionally, you will no longer have to deal with the embarrassment of missing or damaged teeth.

To install dental implants requires surgery. It is only normal for dental implants to cause pain and discomfort to some degree after surgery. However, there is normal pain, and there is pain that indicates a complication. Let us talk about what is typical after having dental implant surgery.

What is Normal After Getting Dental Implants?

Pain and discomfort after getting tooth implants are normal for a few days after the procedure. The dentist should prescribe pain medication to help you manage the pain and have a much more comfortable recovery. Twenty-four to 72 hours after dental implant surgery, patients usually experience peak pain. Therefore, you should take the pain medication as directed by your dentist. Immediately after the procedure, you will likely not feel anything due to the sedative or anesthetic used by the dentist. Ice packs and saltwater rinses can also help alleviate discomfort associated with tooth implants. Apply ice to the cheek where the tooth implants are located for 10 minutes each time, several times a day. Saltwater rinses are a great way to help with discomfort after dental implants. The salt water helps to soothe the area and reduce inflammation. It is important to rinse for at least 30 seconds several times a day.

Between 3 to 7 days, you may feel lingering tenderness, especially around the implant site, which is only normal. After day 3, symptoms should begin to fade away, including bruising and swelling. If your symptoms persist or worsen, let your dentist know.

You can expect full healing for one to two weeks after dental implant surgery. In the meantime, follow your dentist’s instructions and recommendations on food and drink. A soft diet is recommended after dental implants to help promote healing and avoid damaging the implant site. Foods that are soft and easy to chew are best, such as oatmeal, mashed potatoes, chicken soup, cooked vegetables, fish, eggs, and tofu. Avoid hard or crunchy foods that could potentially irritate the implant site.
