Three Alternatives to a Traditional Dental Bridge

August 6, 2021

When you lose a tooth, your dentist can fasten a dental bridge between the adjacent teeth surrounding the gap. This is done in order to fill in the area with a real-looking false tooth called a dental bridge, because it literally “bridges” the gap with a prosthetic tooth.

These traditional bridges are composed of ceramic or porcelain materials. Once a dental bridge is fastened onto your teeth, it will remain permanently secured there and should last for many years.

However, a dental bridge is not fastened directly into your jawbone, so it isn’t quite as strong and solid as other options to replace missing teeth. Let’s talk about three of the most popular alternatives to having traditional bridgework, and where you can go here in Eugene for outstanding dental care.

What Are the Alternatives to a Dental Bridge?

Three alternatives to a traditional dental bridge that you can consider include the following:

#1: Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are removable false teeth. The denture is held in place by a metal framework which is attached to pink, gum-colored plastic.

Some newer designs allow the denture to be attached to the base without a metal framework. Partial dentures work well when at least one natural tooth remains intact in the jaw, so the denture can fasten onto that tooth or teeth.

The disadvantage of removable partial dentures is that they may not be sturdy enough. They also require special care, and they must be removed and soaked during the night every night.

#2: Maryland Bridges

You can also consider Maryland bridges, or resin-bonded bridges. They are considered a conservative solution, as a wing-like metal framework binds the bridge onto the backs of either side of the prosthetic tooth, fastening onto the teeth surrounding the gap.

Maryland bridges are usually recommended for the front teeth, such as the incisors.

#3: Dental Implants

In this procedure, your dentist will install a small screw-like titanium post into your jawbone to replace the root of the missing tooth. This metal post provides the anchor to the crown, which will be placed by your dentist atop the implant once the implant has fully healed into your jawbone. A dental implant serves as a solid and enduring replacement to your original tooth.

The process of getting dental implants involves several procedures which are scheduled over the course of several months. They tend to last much longer than dental bridges do, because a bridge can get loose over time. Indeed, dental implants usually last for a lifetime.
