Root Canal Post-Treatment Care

January 29, 2021

Having a root canal used to be a terribly painful procedure, but no more. Through advancements in dental technology and techniques, and new methods of keeping yourself as pain-free as possible while your tooth heals, you’re sure to have a root canal that’s “smooth sailing.”

Let’s talk about what you can expect to experience after having a root canal, and where you can go for a consultation and treatment of your tooth pain – and dental healthcare for the whole family.

Avoid Hard Foods

During the initial days after your procedure, you will want to only eat soft or liquid foods. Once you get your crown placed atop the root canal, the new tooth will be back to its standard toughness again for chewing all foods.

That said, it’s always best to keep very hard foods to a minimum in order to put less pressure on your teeth. As we get older, the integrity of our teeth and bones can diminish a bit, and you want to keep your teeth strong and healthy.

Chew on the Other Side of Your Mouth

While you are healing, avoid chewing on the side where you had your root canal. This reduces your chance of damaging your dental work.

Take Your Prescription Medication

After your root canal, your dentist will likely give you a prescription for an antibiotic in order to prevent post-procedure infection. Be sure to take all of it, because the area will be vulnerable to bacterial invasion for a certain number of days after your root canal was performed. Remember that you will not “feel” it working, because antibiotics fight infection at a microscopic level in your body.

Contact Your Dentist if You Have Persistent or Severe Pain

If you have pain that is continuous, severe, or not responding to your prescription pain medication, contact your dentist right away. The dentist will give you an alternative treatment that should work better to quell your pain. Also contact your dentist’s office if you experience nausea, vomiting, constipation, or any other unusual symptoms.

Skilled Dentist for Your Root Canal in Eugene, OR

If you or someone in your family is experiencing tooth pain or chronic pain in your mouth, see an experienced dentist. Here at 360 Dental, our own Dr. Ari Binder can evaluate your mouth and teeth and diagnose the issue, and he will then explain your treatment options. The treatment to relieve the pain may be as simple as having a cavity filled to something more involved, like having a root canal.
