The Basics Of Dentistry

June 3, 2022

Young Woman Smiling during Dentistry

Dentistry is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity. It includes both the teeth and gums, as well as the tissues around the mouth.

Dentists are medical professionals who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and conditions of the oral cavity. They help prevent tooth decay by providing services such as cleaning teeth, removing plaque, and teaching patients how to properly care for their teeth. They can specialize in endodontics or root canals, periodontics or the treatment of gum disease, and prosthodontics or installing dental implants.

The general services you can receive at a dentist’s clinic include cleanings, sealants and fillings, and extractions, which are all geared towards conserving teeth. Let’s talk about these services and how they are performed by a dentist.

Oral Exam

An oral exam is usually done on the very first visit and during your biannual visit to the dentist. The purpose of an oral exam is to assess the health of your teeth and gums. The dentist will visually examine your mouth, teeth, gums, and tongue. They will feel for any lumps or bumps and look for any signs of inflammation. Next, they will use a small mirror to check all surfaces of your teeth.

During the exam, your dentist will:

  • Inspect your teeth for signs of decay or damage
  • Check for gum disease
  • Look for any other potential problems such as signs of oral cancer

After the examination, your dentist will discuss their findings with you and develop a treatment plan, if necessary.

Professional Teeth Cleanings

Dental cleanings, also called prophylaxis, are the removal of plaque and tartar from teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of food particles and saliva. Tartar is hardened plaque that has been left on teeth for too long and can only be removed by professional cleanings.

The dentist will first remove any plaque and tartar from the teeth using special instruments. They will then use a rotating brush to clean the surfaces of the teeth, and finally, they will floss in between each tooth.

Tooth Fillings

Dental sealants are used to fill in cracks and crevices in teeth, preventing food and bacteria from getting trapped. They are usually made of glass ionomers and composite resin fillings and assist in preventing tooth decay.

Fillings, on the other hand, are used to fill cavities or tooth decay. The first step is to remove the decayed tooth material. Next, the area is cleaned and prepared for the filling. There are different types of fillings available, but dentists usually use amalgam (silver) or composite (tooth-colored). Your dentist will help you decide which type of filling is best for you based on the location/severity of the cavity and cost considerations.

Tooth Extraction

Another common procedure performed by dentists is extraction, which involves removing a tooth from its socket in the bone due to decay or injury. After numbing the area with local anesthesia, the dentist will loosen the tooth with an instrument called an elevator before using forceps to remove it.

Why You Should Visit a Dentist Regularly

It is important to visit a dentist even without oral issues, because they can help prevent future problems. They can also catch any early signs of problems and provide treatment before they become more serious. Dental problems can exist without your dentist bringing them to your attention. Moreover, dentists can also provide services that improve the appearance of your smile, boosting your attractiveness and raising your confidence.
