How to Prepare for a Root Canal Treatment

July 23, 2021

A root canal is a dental procedure recommended to patients with severe tooth decay. Once the cavity reaches the pulp of the tooth, the dentist will need to clean out the canal — by taking out the pulp and nerves inside the tooth — to remove bacteria and prevent reinfection. After cleaning out the root canal, a crown will be placed over the tooth to protect it.

A root canal is a major dental procedure, but it is very common and relatively painless. Here’s how to prepare for a root canal treatment, so it goes smoothly.

Communicate With Your Dentist

It is natural to have many questions before a root canal. Talk to your dentist in detail and have all your questions answered ahead of time. In order to prepare for the procedure, talk about logistics. Discuss what time to arrive, how long the procedure will take, and arrange for a ride.

Pain control is one of the most important things to discuss with your dentist. Discuss which painkillers you should take after the root canal. If you are anxious about the procedure or suffer from dental anxiety, ask your dentist about sedation for a more relaxing and comfortable experience.

Don’t Drink Alcohol

Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before the procedure. Drinking can increase the risk of complications during the procedure. It is even recommended that patients avoid alcohol after the procedure as it slows recovery. Make sure to avoid drinking while you are taking painkillers, as they could have an interaction with alcohol.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking can delay healing. Try to avoid smoking at least a few days before the procedure and while in recovery. If this is a problem for you, talk to your dentist about it ahead of time.

Eat Before the Procedure

After a root canal, you may not be able to eat normally for up to a week. After the procedure, your mouth will also be numb, and you may not feel like eating. Eat as much of your favorite foods as you like before the scheduled procedure, but after the procedure, eat only soft, gentle foods. This will help you avoid complications, reduce pain, and aid in recovery.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Getting at least eight hours of sleep the night before the procedure helps you stay relaxed. If you lack sleep, you are more likely to feel anxious or nervous about the procedure. Sleep can also help shorten recovery time. It is recommended that patients focus on their recovery and sleep well after root canal treatment.
