How to Prepare for a Teeth Cleaning

How to Prepare for a Teeth Cleaning

by Kassandra Silva (SU)

Going to your dentist twice a year for a regular checkup and cleaning helps prevent oral issues and helps keep your teeth looking healthy and bright. You may wonder whether there is anything special you should do before your professional teeth cleaning.

Let’s talk about a few things you may not have thought about when it comes to getting ready for your dentist’s appointment and dental cleaning, and where you can go in Eugene to see a skilled family dentist who can help you keep your teeth healthy and spectacular.

#1: Brush and Floss Your Teeth

The more your dental hygienist has to clean off of your teeth during your appointment, the longer your dental cleaning might take. That is why it is best to brush your teeth and, ideally, also floss before your dental appointment. If your teeth have a lot of food debris on them, don’t be surprised if your hygienist and dentist give you some gentle advice about brushing and flossing!

#2: Arrive Early and Bring Any New Medical Information

Especially if you are seeing a new dentist, you will need to fill out forms where you detail your medical history, allergies, dental history, medications, supplements, and recent dental X-rays if possible. You will also need to provide your insurance card and/or other form of payment.

Arriving early to your appointment helps reduce the chance of delays that can result from filling out paperwork. It also offers more flexibility if it’s time for you to have new dental X-rays taken. Plus, if the hygienist can see you earlier, you may be able to finish the visit earlier as well.

#3: Do Not Smoke

Avoid smoking before your scheduled teeth cleaning. Since you’ve already brushed and flossed your teeth, you will be reintroducing harmful bacteria and chemicals into your mouth. Smoking just creates more debris on your teeth and oral tissues for your hygienist to have to remove.

#4: Don’t Use Whitening Products Beforehand

Becoming overzealous with the use of whitening products before a scheduled dental cleaning is common. After all, we want to impress the dentist and the hygienist with how beautiful our teeth look, right?

However, teeth whitening products can make the teeth extra-sensitive, and this can make professional cleaning an uncomfortable experience. Check with the dental office beforehand about when you should stop using whitening products before your appointment.

#5: Consider Sedation if You Have Dental Phobia

If you tend to have dental anxiety, let the dentist and/or hygienist know beforehand. IV (intravenous) sedation delivers mild and temporary medication directly into your bloodstream that is designed to help you relax during your entire dental visit.

The dental staff will explain how it works, and it is a game-changer for many dental patients.
