How Long Do Teeth Implants Last?

How Long Do Teeth Implants Last?

Are you self-conscious about your smile? Perhaps you find yourself with lips pursed in pictures, or you’re constantly covering or hiding your mouth for fear that someone will notice your crooked, stained, or missing teeth.

There’s a solution you may not have considered before. One of the greatest advancements in the field of dentistry is the dental implant, and it has been a life-changing invention for many people with sub-par oral health. Dental implants present a welcome alternative to ill-fitting dentures or dental bridges.

What Are Tooth Implants?

According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), dental implants are, in essence, artificial tooth roots. Just as screws bond together the pieces of your favorite piece of furniture, dental implants are affixed to the jawbone and provide a stable support to hold in place artificial custom-made teeth known as “crowns.”

The crown is permanently placed atop an implant – they go together to create the entire artificial tooth (prosthetic tooth). The crown is fashioned to look like a regular tooth.

With over 30 years of use, dental implants and crowns are certainly a tried-and-true method of creating more aesthetically pleasing smiles. Looking back in history, past civilizations utilized similar tactics for teeth replacement: Excavations from the Mayans and ancient Egyptians showed skeletal remains with tooth-shaped shells as “placeholders” for teeth.

Years ago, labor-intensive bridges were the only option for repairing missing or damaged teeth. A bridge fills in gaps where teeth are missing with prosthetic teeth.

A bridge fits atop and over the existing teeth to fasten properly. The bridge can and should be removed and cleaned every night before going to bed, and it can be placed back into the mouth in the morning.

Implants, on the other hand, allow your dentist to fully replace the teeth that need fixing – leaving surrounding structures unscathed, whereas a bridge can cause damage to adjacent healthy teeth. Additionally, an implant offers easier access to gums for cleaning, which helps contribute to healthy gums.

Why Should I Get Dental Implants?

Dental implants are an excellent long-term option for missing teeth, offering unprecedented durability. This is due in part to their lightweight and super-strong composition.

According to AAID, implants are carefully crafted of titanium, one of the strongest metals available. Over time, these titanium implants fuse with your bone in a process called osteointegration. With proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits, they can last up to 25 years or more.

One caveat is that the person in question must have enough healthy bone in the jaw to hold the implant in place. In recent years, the advent of meticulous 3-D computer-guided dental implant procedures has further advanced the technique, offering a clearer view of the affected area, and unparalleled reliability and longevity due to the precise placement of implants.

The ability to map out the procedure beforehand has revolutionized the procedure.
