What to Expect for Your Child's First Dental Appointment

by Holly (SU)

It can be confusing when trying to figure out when to take your baby to their first dental appointment. You don’t want to take your baby in too soon, meaning you will have to be back in for a visit when their first tooth pops up. You, however, shouldn’t wait until they have a full set of teeth yet, either. It’s important to settle on the right dentist that will be there for the growth and development of your child. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your baby have their first dental appointment sometime in between the growth of their first tooth and their first birthday.

While it may seem overwhelming to think about yet another first appointment, there is a little bit of leeway in your window to schedule your first dental visit. It may seem overage, still having a young baby, to be planning for their first dental visit and selecting the right dentist, but it’s important to be vigilant. A baby is at risk for cavities and decay as soon as the first tooth pops up. That doesn’t mean that you should be worried, but that selecting the right dentist sooner rather than later would be most helpful in navigating the teething times.

So, what can you expect from your first appointment? A big part of the first meeting for your baby and their new dentist is to help them become acquainted with each other in a non-threatening way. After all, there are not enough teeth to need a root canal or a filling just yet. They will, however, be able to examine the growth of their jaw, their gums, and scan for any possible decay in their first tooth or teeth. Should you decide beforehand that your baby needs a cleaning, your dentist can also take care of that during their first visit, as well.

It’s best to make your appointment in the morning after your baby has slept a full night, is well rested and in good spirits. Again, the appointment won’t be too extensive, but it will allow you to decide if this is the right dentist to join you and your family on your baby’s dental development and journey.
