Five Must-Have Qualities of a Great Dentist

Five Must-Have Qualities of a Great Dentist

by Holly (SU)

Are you looking for a new dentist? Dentists are an important resource for your oral health, and it’s really important to choose a great one to ensure your pearly whites are in good hands. What qualities should a great dentist have?  Here are five to look for when you are on the search for one!

1.     Keeps updated on latest technologies – A good dentist will have the right credentials, certifications and experience to work on your teeth. But, a great dentist will have these and one more:  knowledge about the newest technological advancements available in dentistry. Like in any field, improvements to dentistry are made every day. Great dentists will keep up with these advancements so that their patients get are assured the best possible care available. Ask your dentist what kind of equipment and technologies the office uses, and what he or she does to learn about advancements being made in the field.

2.     Offers a welcoming and safe atmosphere – Children are not the only ones who hate going to the dentist. Getting in the dentist’s chair and having someone use scary looking tools in your mouth can be terrifying. Great dentists understand that although they work in this field every single day and see hundreds of patients a week, every patient is unique. Great dentists will offer a welcoming and safe atmosphere so that every patient feels safe and comfortable when climbing into the dentist’s chair. Make sure your dentist takes the time to answer all of your questions and makes you feel comfortable.

3.     Is easily accessible – Nobody plans to have a dental emergency but sometimes they just happen. Imagine getting a loose crown or having severe pain in your tooth and not being able to see your dentist for several days. Although routine appointments are important for oral care, taking care of emergencies should take precedent. Great dentists will have a system in place to deal with emergencies. Ask your dentist how his office plans for emergencies and how easy it is to get an appointment on short notice.

4.     Educates you – Your dentist went to dental school. You probably did not, so it’s fair to say that when it comes to knowing your mouth, your dentist can teach you a thing or two.  Great dentists will educate their patients before, during, and after treatments so they are knowledgeable about their condition and the options available to them. Your dentist should explain how the procedure will be done and what side effects – if any – you can expect. He will work with you to devise a treatment plan and will listen to your concerns.

5.     Has a friendly and professional staff – Great dentists have a great support team. If your dentist is amazing but has a staff team that is rude, unprofessional, or not knowledgeable, you may decide to find a new practice. Your dentist’s entire team should be supportive and pleasant to work with. You are likely to deal with them as much as you will deal with your dentist. When choosing a dentist, make sure to assess how you are treated over the phone and in person by the front desk receptionist and the rest of the dental staff.
