Fun Facts About Your Teeth

Fun Facts About Your Teeth

by Yenny (SU)

Remember putting your first tooth under a pillow? It was so much fun to wake up knowing the Tooth Fairy added you to her rounds. Well, here are some interesting, fun facts about your teeth that are dentist-approved and Tooth Fairy-endorsed!

1.     An apple a day keeps…the dentist away? Maybe! Certain foods such as apples, nuts, and raisins have either sticky or gentle abrasive qualities that actually brush away dirt and particles from your teeth, naturally and easily! Plus, apples are clever! They can be tangy, tasty, and tooth-friendly thanks to their crisp skin that can gently scrape away plaque, and, they contain phlorizin, which has been shown to increase bone density.

2.     Don’t let the hard exterior fool you! Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body! But that doesn’t mean your teeth are invincible! Plaque caused by bacteria know your teeth are softies at heart, and will do everything in their power to destroy your pearly whites. Be sure to brush and floss to keep bacteria away.

3.     Got milk? Great! If your tooth gets knocked out, put your tooth in a cup of milk and get to the dentist right away! The milk will actually help preserve the tooth.

4.     Drink (more) milk for strong, saliva!?  Calcium-rich dairy products, which include milk, yogurt, and cheese, not only help build strong bones and teeth, they promote saliva secretion, which is a bit of a secret weapon against the bacteria that can form in your mouth. Lactose intolerant? Try soymilk, lactose free milk, or calcium supplements.

5.     A Titanic thought. Did you know that only two-thirds of your tooth is underneath your gums? Like the iceberg that sunk the Titanic, there is a whole lot more happening below the surface so keep watch and floss often!

6.     Your teeth are unique to you. Just like fingerprints, no two sets of teeth are alike. As a matter of fact, before the military started using DNA to identify remains, they used panoramic X-rays.

7.     Speaking of X-rays. Think your dentist only uses imaging to look for cavities? Nope! X-rays can be used to determine advanced periodontal disease; cysts, tumors, and oral cancers; sinus issues; impacted wisdom (or long-forgotten baby) teeth; and jaw disorders such as TMJ.

8.     Grinding your teeth is a thing! Grinding your teeth while you sleep actually is a medical condition called bruxism, and can result in cracked teeth, headaches, a horrible night’s sleep, and marital disagreements!

9.     Stem cells. Teeth’s stem cells are being studied to regrow human teeth!

10.  A universe, in your mouth. There are more bacteria living in your mouth than there are people living on planet earth. Maybe that’s why they call it a throat “culture?”

11.  Bonus Facts! These aren’t necessarily about your teeth, but they are pretty fascinating! Giraffes only have bottom teeth. A snail’s mouth is no larger than the head of a pin, but it can have more than 25,000 teeth? The blue whale is the largest mammal on earth, but it has no teeth so it can only eat tiny shrimp and brine. Finally, the crocodile bird is the world’s bravest dentist because it flies into the open mouth of a crocodile to clean its teeth (and the croc is the best patient, because it is the only animal that can regrow its teeth!)
